Individualized Type 2 Diabetes Risk Prediction and Prevention
Background
The risk prediction modeling for this calculator was built upon the Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) randomized trial and study data. This calculator incorporates the known heterogeneity for the DPP interventions on diabetes prevention by baseline weight and blood glucose, and thus provides an individualized predicted risk. The preventive interventions, metformin or lifestyle modification, are assumed to follow the protocol employed in the DPP trial. [1,2]
Metformin Protocol: titration to 850mg tablet twice daily (or manageable dose), standard lifestyle recommendations, and annual individual lifestyle session.
Intensive Lifestyle Intervention Protocol: achieve and maintain 7% weight loss through healthy low-calorie and low-fat diet, maintaining moderate-intensity physical activity of ≥150 minutes weekly, and behavioral change curriculum designed to help set and achieve dietary and physical activity goals.
The derivation and validation of this calculator will be posted when published.
